Exoplanetary Science – Astronomical Instrumentation – Habitability – Atmospheric Biosignatures

Sascha is an exoplanetary scientist, principal investigator (PI) and head of the Exoplanets & Habitability Research Group in the Department of Physics at ETH Zurich. After he graduated with a PhD from the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg, he spent 2 years as a Management Consultant at McKinsey & Company before returning to acadmia. Sascha is driven by the long-term goal to search for life outside our Solar System, i.e., on planets orbiting stars other than our Sun. The work of his research team is focused on the development and implementation of the LIFE Space Mission that Sascha leads as PI. As one of the most ambitious space missions ever conceived, LIFE will allow humankind to detect and characterize the atmospheres of hundreds of exoplanets in the immediate vicinity of our Sun including dozens that are similar to Earth. Investigating whether some of them contain atmospheric constituents that indicate the presence of a biosphere is the primary goal of the LIFE mission. Sascha is also an Associated Member at the Max Planck – ETH Center for Learning Systems, the ETH AI Center, and the ETH Department of Earth and Planetary Science.
