Oscar Laurent is a researcher in geology and geochemistry at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). He completed his PhD about the Archean-Proterozoic transition in 2012 under the supervision of Hervé Martin in Clermont-Ferrand University (France). He then worked as a post-doc at Frankfurt University (Germany), Liège University (Belgium) and ETH Zürich (Switzerland) before being hired at CNRS in 2019, first in Toulouse and now back in Clermont-Ferrand since 2026. His research focuses on how the Earth’s continental crust formed and evolved through time, especially in the Hadean and Archean with implications for the environment in which life emerged. He uses microanalytical tools to retrieve geochronological and geochemical information about the formation of continental (granitic) rocks, encapsulated in their minerals (notably zircon). He has been leading several European (Marie Curie) and national (ANR) projects, notably on Archean geodynamic processes and links between granitic magmatism and mineral resources.
