Thomas Gautier is a planetary scientist and and Research Director at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) working at the Laboratoire Atmosphères et Observations Spatiales (LATMOS) where he leads the Astrochemistry and Astrobiology team. His works focuses on the formation, evolution and characterization of planetary atmospheres and small body surfaces through the studies of both atmospheric processes and solid organic matter composition. Using laboratory experiments, he studies the formation of organic matter in the atmospheres of the solar system from the Early Earth to Pluto. He is also involved in space exploration with the design and exploitation of scientific instruments aboard past, present, and future probes for the in-situ exploration of the solar system. He is currently involved as Co-Investigator of the MIRS infrared spectro-imager on board the JAXA Martian Moon eXploration mission that is expected to sample Phobos surface and bring back to Earth the first samples from the Martian sphere.
